Getting Married at Houchins

Civil Ceremonies

Indoor, outdoor, large or small? When it comes to civil ceremonies there are so many choices. And of course it's all down to the type of day you want.....

At Houchins, we can offer all of the above because we have three separate areas designated to conduct civil ceremonies:

The Loggia   This is designed for outdoor summer weddings (May to September). The oak-clad Loggia sits at the end of the wedding garden and is connected to a traditional marquee that offers covered seating for 100+ guests. From here it is just a short walk to the terrace where reception drinks are served.

The Foundry  Within the barns, the Foundry offers a stunning backdrop for civil ceremonies throughout the year. Again, capacity in the Foundry will be for 100+ guests. Before taking their seats for the formalities, friends can mingle in the inter-connected 'Chitting Shed'.

The Drawing Room (in the house)  If you are looking for a small and intimate civil ceremony, for less than 25 people, you may wish to consider using the drawing room in the main house. With its' open fireplace, 17th century oak panelling and more formal decor it offers a perfect space for smaller civil ceremonies.

Civil ceremonies at Houchins are conducted by the Registrar's team at Braintree District Council. Please contact them directly on 0345 6037632.

Woodland Weddings

In addition to the 3 civil ceremony spaces listed above is our wonderful Wedding Woodland.  Tucked away behind the moat amongst the trees is the most charming spot to declare your love.  It is an area of natural beauty and perfect for a unique ceremony.

The Woodland Wedding entails:

*this is not a legally binding ceremony & is normally undertaken in conjunction with a civil ceremony at a registry office.

Please ask us for more details if you are interested in a Woodland Wedding.

Church Weddings

Our local church, St Peter and Vincula Church in nearby Coggeshall is only 10 minutes from the venue.  It is one of a group of oversized churches built following the success of the early wool trade in the first quarter of the 15th Century.  It is Grade I listed.

“From the moment my wife and I drove up to Houchins we knew this stunning venue was where we wanted to have our special day. The grounds, barn and farmhouse are beautiful in every way and the team ensure every corner and aspect of the venue is of the highest standard. We can’t thank the Houchins team enough for all that they did both leading up to our wedding day and ensuring our magical day ran smoothly. No request was too much, no question too silly and the day was perfect thanks to the amazing team and all their work behind the scenes. You guys really made our day special and your venue is head and shoulders above any of your competition (trust me I was dragged around the whole of the Southeast in search of the perfect venue!) Thank you Houchins, not only from my wife and I but from all our guests who had the most amazing day. Amy & Stuart, July 2019 ”
