Getting Married at Houchins
Indoor, outdoor, large or small? When it comes to civil ceremonies there are so many choices. And of course it's all down to the type of day you want.....
At Houchins, we can offer all of the above because we have three separate areas designated to conduct civil ceremonies:
The Loggia This is designed for outdoor summer weddings (May to September). The oak-clad Loggia sits at the end of the wedding garden and is connected to a traditional marquee that offers covered seating for 100+ guests. From here it is just a short walk to the terrace where reception drinks are served.
The Foundry Within the barns, the Foundry offers a stunning backdrop for civil ceremonies throughout the year. Again, capacity in the Foundry will be for 100+ guests. Before taking their seats for the formalities, friends can mingle in the inter-connected 'Chitting Shed'.
The Drawing Room (in the house) If you are looking for a small and intimate civil ceremony, for less than 25 people, you may wish to consider using the drawing room in the main house. With its' open fireplace, 17th century oak panelling and more formal decor it offers a perfect space for smaller civil ceremonies.
Civil ceremonies at Houchins are conducted by the Registrar's team at Braintree District Council. Please contact them directly on 0345 6037632.
In addition to the 3 civil ceremony spaces listed above is our wonderful Wedding Woodland. Tucked away behind the moat amongst the trees is the most charming spot to declare your love. It is an area of natural beauty and perfect for a unique ceremony.
The Woodland Wedding entails:
- Exclusive and private use of the whole venue for the day of your wedding
- Clearing the woodland space ready for your set up
- An outdoor woodland area for unlicensed wedding ceremonies*
- A relaxed, rustic 'festival vibe' with the luxury of the Houchins experience
- An additional fee for rustic chair hire
- A wide selection of fabulous props to hire
*this is not a legally binding ceremony & is normally undertaken in conjunction with a civil ceremony at a registry office.
Please ask us for more details if you are interested in a Woodland Wedding.
Our local church, St Peter and Vincula Church in nearby Coggeshall is only 10 minutes from the venue. It is one of a group of oversized churches built following the success of the early wool trade in the first quarter of the 15th Century. It is Grade I listed.
